"Freud was not a genius of science, but of propaganda." — Hans Eysenck, Decline and Fall of the Freudian Empire During my final year of business school, in 2011, I chose an introductory course in psychoanalysis as an option. I still remember the very first session: the professor's slides were scrolling, and when the slide devoted to the definition of psychoanalysis appeared, I balked. It said "Psychoanalysis is a science...". I couldn't help but raise my hand to ask the professor if she was sure that psychoanalysis could be defined as a science. And... she took it badly. It was right around the time of the release of Michel Onfray's pamphlet on Freud, a book that caused a stir and undermined the credibility of psychoanalysis in public opinion. The professor answered my question the way psychoanalysts reacted to Michel Onfray's book: the questioning of psychoanalysis is a political attack; it is a persecution orchestrated by xenophobic, even anti-Semitic, movements. Such knee-jerk reactions reveal the fragility of psychoanalytic ideas, because solid thought does not need to leave the terrain of argumentation to defend itself. However, we should not conclude that everything is to be thrown out. Certain conceptions of psychoanalysis are certainly false ideas that do not correspond to the reality of the human mind; but other conceptions - a good part of which have been drawn from the history of thought - seem correct and are useful for understanding the world. Moreover - and this is, in my opinion, the main reason for the success of psychoanalysis - it is seductive. Indeed, it is a deterministic theory of the mind, an unknown land which it postulates obeys a necessary chain of causes and effects. And by giving pride of place, in the determinisms of the mind, to secrecy and sexuality, it naturally attracts the attention of public opinion. Psychoanalysis is by far the most influential school of psychological thought of the 20th century. In this lesson, I will answer the following questions: 1) What is psychoanalysis? 2) What can we learn from Freud? 3) What are Freud's key ideas? 4) What are the major developments in psychoanalysis? 5) What are the limits of psychoanalysis? Do you have any questions? Write them in the comments and I will be happy to answer them.
