Your orthopedist might say so and the MRI image might also show a herniated disc, but is it true that the back pain therefore comes from the intervertebral discs? If so, what can be done about it? Surgery is usually NOT necessary. In the video I will explain whether the intervertebral discs are the culprits behind your back pain and, if so, what you can do about it. In just 3-5% of cases of back pain, does it actually come from the intervertebral disc. Around 180,000 Germans suffer a herniated disc each year. That sounds like a lot, but when you consider that around 60% of Germans have "real" back pain at least once a year, i.e. over 40 million, then 180,000 is not a lot. You often hear that the disc has slipped out. It's not that simple. An intervertebral disc consists of 2 parts: a gelatinous core + a ring around it. And what happens now is that this gelatinous core can break out of the ring. Our intervertebral disc is one of the so-called bradytrophic tissue types, which means that the intervertebral disc is not supplied by its own blood vessels. So no artery with blood penetrates our intervertebral disc. Very interesting: In the womb, the intervertebral disc is still supplied by its own blood vessels. After birth, it only receives nutrients and fluid passively. Nutrition occurs via diffusion, i.e. the flow of fluid triggered by movement and compression. The intervertebral disc absorbs water and nutrients from the surrounding tissue fluid like a sponge - especially at night. During the day, when we are active, some of the fluid is pushed out of the intervertebral disc due to our body weight when we are standing and sitting. This is why we lose a little height during the day and then gain it back at night. The difference in height can be several cm. So it is important to note that physical exercise is directly responsible for nourishing the intervertebral disc. If we don’t move enough, the diffusion of nutrient fluid into the intervertebral discs does not get started. This can then result in an acidic environment, i.e. a low pH value.
