In 2025, those insured under statutory health insurance will have to pay more money for their health than ever before. There is a hole of around 14 billion euros in the coffers. Germany already has the most expensive health system in Europe - and yet the money is not enough. Why is that? Do we have to say goodbye to the solidarity principle in health insurance in the long term? And how expensive will that be? For Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD), the problem is obvious. We spend far too little money on prevention, digitization in the health care system is not making progress, and spending on inpatient care is rising at a record pace. That is why the hospital reform he initiated, which the Bundestag passed this week, is essential. That may be the case in the medium term, but in the short term the reform will require an additional 5 billion euros each year for the next 10 years. And that money has not even been factored into the upcoming increase. Cost drivers are new, expensive drugs and the use of high-tech medicine in an increasingly ageing society. In addition, the health insurance funds are also under a lot of pressure because they pay for non-insurance services, such as medical care for people receiving citizen benefits. The coalition had promised to change this. So far, nothing has happened. The question is how we can ensure good medical treatment for everyone in the future? Without additional tax revenue of 100 billion euros, the system would have collapsed long ago. Is there still potential for savings without affecting care? Or do we need a radical system change in which everyone pays into a common health insurance system? Karl Lauterbach has been advocating citizen insurance for years - but the political majority for it is lacking. Do the health insurance funds have to drastically cut the list of services? Do we need an honest debate about who will be able to claim which care in full in the future and who will not? What do the insured have to prepare for?
