Contact: [email protected] Could you teach me not to feel pain when a needle is inserted under my fingernail? – I ask Prof. Przemysław Bąbel, head of the Institute of Psychology at the Jagiellonian University. We have just sat down to talk after the scientist showed me the laboratory and machines for inflicting (controlled) pain on subjects. – I don’t know that. But there are methods that would certainly allow to alleviate this pain – he replies. And these would be psychological methods, not pharmacological ones. - For example, if you observed other people who had this needle stuck under their fingernail and who were happy, saying that it didn’t hurt at all, the chance that it would hurt you a lot is much smaller – he adds. Prof. Bąbel’s team is studying the effect of placebo on the experience of pain. This is a fascinating phenomenon, to be honest, I can barely comprehend it. An example? – Parkinson’s disease. There, they make a specific placebo, which is a fake surgery. They open the skull, close it and this fake surgery itself causes not only an increase in dopamine levels, but also behavioral changes, e.g. generally, motor skills increase. And they do nothing except open the skull. We have many such examples – says Prof. Bąbel. The placebo effect can be caused by someone else's opinion about a drug, the color of the pill, its size or number. It is an extraordinary effect, but it has its limitations. - Generally, it is believed that it works on what is curable. For example, in the case of cancer, we have data that shows that placebo can improve the quality of life, can reduce pain, but does not prolong life – emphasizes the scientist. In the podcast, we talk about placebo, the reverse effect, i.e. nocebo, and how precise and reliable a science psychology is. A great episode, I highly recommend it! ????
