After working as a private tutor, at the age of 46, he became a professor of Metaphysics and Logic at the university of his hometown. Kant will propose an innovative way of considering the subject in front of the task of knowledge, attributing to man a set of structures and modalities that actively determine his way of knowing reality. Due to its historical setting and its theoretical traits, Kant's philosophy can be considered the pinnacle of the reflections of the Enlightenment. This movement, which originates from late seventeenth-century English philosophy and which will experience its greatest development in eighteenth-century France, owes its name to the illuminating function of reason. Thanks to it, man can in fact illuminate all fields of knowledge and eliminate the shadows cast by prejudices and traditions inherited from previous cultures. At the heart of the Enlightenment is therefore one of the main aspects of Kant's thought, namely the consideration of reason as a critical tool. A tool that, if used correctly, can direct man towards a progressive improvement in every area of knowledge and in political and moral conduct. Kant died in Köningsberg in 1804.
