The current show quer is about bankrupt construction companies and desperate buyers, the question of whether "Bavarian" is a dialect or a language, and a cicada that is threatening potatoes and sugar beets. You can see all this and much more here: https://1.ard.de/quer?yt=vd Potatoes and sugar beets are becoming soft and shriveled - so-called rubbery tubers. The reason is a plant disease that is transmitted by the reed glasswing cicada. Climate change has paved the way for the insect to reach Bavaria. Farmers often lose half of their harvest - and the cicada is spreading further and further. Experts fear that farmers could stop growing potatoes altogether. The tricky thing is that there is no antidote. Insecticides that could help are banned in the EU to protect bees. The first farmers are already calling for the banned neonicotinoids to be allowed to be used again as long as there are no other antidotes. Research is being carried out feverishly, but so far without success.
