Since September 2, Dominique Pelicot and his 50 co-defendants have been on trial for aggravated rape of his ex-wife Gisèle, who was sedated. For about ten years, Dominique Pelicot drugged his wife to rape her and have her raped, unconscious, by dozens of strangers. 72 in all according to the latest figures. Gisèle Pelicot decided to open this trial to the public to invite all of society to ask questions and change mentalities. Through her courage, she has become an emblematic figure in the movement to combat violence against women. A symbol in France but also internationally, with a message “shame must change sides”. In France, 94% of rape trials are dismissed and only 1% of rapists are convicted. While a rape or attempted rape occurs every 2 minutes 30 seconds, or 217,000 per year. (2022). For several months, a conversation has been opened on the omnipresence of rape in our society and everything that allows it. The maximum sentence of 20 years was requested against Dominique Pélicot. 4 to 18 years of sentences against the 50 other accused. The verdict should be delivered no later than December 20.
