This week in an episode of Later als ik Groot ben: working as an anesthesia assistant, or putting a patient under anesthesia in a hospital. In the Netherlands, around 1.5 million operations are performed each year. To ensure that a patient does not notice anything during the operation, an anesthesia assistant ensures that the patient is put under and kept under anesthesia. In this episode of Later als ik Groot ben, Jochem van Gelder and Amber are allowed to experience the preparations for an operation. 12-year-old Amber wants to work in a hospital when she grows up. Working on the operating table seems exciting to her. She thinks that you have to be able to tolerate blood for that anyway. But also that you have to be patient to reassure people. And you have to know how the human body works. Later when she grows up, Amber wants to become an anesthesia assistant: she thinks it would be really cool to put a patient under anesthesia for a medical procedure. Jochem van Gelder surprises Amber with a working day at the Rivierenland Hospital in Tiel. Around 40 operations are performed in this hospital every day. Anaesthesia assistant Pim gives them a tour of the operating room, or OR. They enter the operating room wearing a blue OR suit, cap and clogs. Do you actually know why these suits are blue? Amber learns on a doll how to apply the hood ventilation and how to intubate. This requires specific actions. In a real situation, the patient would no longer be able to breathe independently at that point. Then it's time: Amber is allowed to put the patient under anaesthesia in preparation for an operation.
