The Mysterious Case of Styles, Agatha Christie's first published work, was supposedly born from a bet, the stakes being that the reader would not even guess who the murderer was until the very last pages. According to one of her first admirers, the author certainly won the bet. The novel, written during the First World War, was rejected by an English publisher, and was therefore published in New York in 1920, exactly one hundred years ago. The plot, full of unexpected twists and turns, with its sure-handed writing and original characters, presents us with the Agatha Christie we know from her later, classic works, even though the author began this novel at the age of twenty-six, and it was only an initial attempt that has since been lost. The Mysterious Case of Styles is a significant piece of her oeuvre, not least because it introduces Inspector Poirot, who fled to England to escape the war. In her first novel, The Mysterious Case at Styles, she created her master detective hero, Hercule Poirot, and his faithful companion and chronicler, the brave Captain Hastings; and in the last one, which was found in the estate and supposedly kept in a safe (Curtain), she tells the story of Poirot's last investigation and death. Symbolically, the setting of the two novels is the same: we meet Poirot in the same prestigious Styles castle, where we say goodbye to him. In the first novel, the mistress of the castle, Mrs. Inglethorp, becomes the victim of murder, partly because of her curiosity, partly because of her passion for making new wills. Suspicion immediately shifts to her newly-made second husband. However, Poirot does not allow her to be arrested, but methodically investigates the also suspicious family members, the mistress's two sons and daughter-in-law, thus arriving at the brilliant revelation.
