For example, very great writers have recounted their journeys from one social class to another in works that have become references. But this concept is also used more and more widely in shows by stars of song, film, or social networks. And the media love it: In 2017, the expressions "class defectors" and "transclasses" were used 16 times in major national dailies, compared to 64 times in 2019, 186 times in 2021, and 307 times in the first half of 2023 (Europresse corpus). The use of the term has become so common that it is sometimes applied to personalities whose extent of social mobility is contested. But true or false stories of class defectors: what is their place today? What are they for? How are they constructed? Linguist Laélia Véron decided to analyze these speeches, and to question their political role.
