The word "palliative" usually scares both the patients themselves and their loved ones. Regardless of the diagnosis, they think that this is about the end of life. But this is not always the case. At first, this word was used to refer to a medicine or other means that provides temporary relief to the patient and helps to remove symptoms and improve well-being. In this case, it was not about curing the disease, but about maximizing life extension. In modern medicine, the concept of "palliative care" has also appeared. This is a set of measures that improve the quality of life of patients and their families. What is radical and symptomatic palliative treatment, when should palliative care be offered, why, despite the law, a full-fledged system of such care in Ukraine still does not work, and what to do if a patient is simply denied the opportunity to live without suffering with a chronic disease. The author of the podcast, Yana Sedova, talked about this with a doctor, oncologist from Kropyvnytskyi, Andrey Gardashnikov, who writes a lot on this topic on his FB page and in his personal blog. Gardashnikov is also a supporter of the use of medical cannabis; in August, he recorded an address to the President of Ukraine, in which he called on politicians not to speculate on this topic and to add medical cannabis to the arsenal of doctors as a symptomatic therapy.
