In this video I show you all the steps on how to paint an interior door. We also give tips from the painter! Painting a panel door is quite a job if you don't know where to start and how to do it effectively. That's why I clearly explain all the steps in this video on how I paint a panel door, so that you can do it yourself properly. Step 1: Surroundings First of all, you need a place to paint, so we clear the entire area of stuff and any other obstacles that are in the way. The door handle and the shield must be removed from the door so that they don't get in the way of painting. You also make sure that the area doesn't get too dusty by, for example, putting a tarpaulin over the stuff. Step 2: Cleaning. Before you start sanding, clean the entire door and frame so that no dirt can get into the paint anywhere and when you start sanding, the dirt doesn't get into the surface. It is important to clean the top of the door and along the lock, because there are a lot of contaminants here that are very annoying when you start painting. Step 3: Packing If you are also going to paint the frame, you do this first, but in any case you also tape it off with a good tape to prevent paint on the floor. Even for the painter it is still difficult to paint along the floor, so just tape it off with a good tape. Before painting, always place a piece of cardboard under the door, because a cloth or newspapers only get in the way. Step 4: Sanding When you are going to sand, do not do this with sandpaper that is too coarse, because otherwise you will certainly make visible scratches inside that you will have difficulty removing from the surface. So if you are sanding an interior door, do this with sandpaper P180 or finer (a higher number). Always sand in the direction of the wood grain as I show in the video and watch out for the sharp edges that you can sand through. If you sand down to the bare wood again, you will have to prime it. Step 5: Dusting Dust the surface with a painter's dustpan and then possibly with a tack cloth, this will remove all fine dust from the surface. A tack cloth is usually not necessary, but it is possible. It is also possible with a wet cloth, but then you will smear the dust rather than remove it. Step 6: Repair To repair holes you can use fillers or for minor damage you can use lacquer putty (you also sand this again after drying). For open seams you always use sealant so that they can also absorb the movement of the wood later. You usually do this with acrylic sealant. Step 7: Priming You must prime all the places that you have repaired or caulked. You also do this with the bare wooden spots on your door. It is important that you do not leave any thick edges, so that the paint is distributed and spread well. Step 8: Priming the door You prime the door in the same order as you are going to paint it later and I explain this clearly in the video. (5:45) You always prime the door with a primer or a water-based primer. Step 9: Sanding Yes, we are going to sand again, because there may be some dirt in the paint layer and you have to sand this out, so that it is not in your paint layer. You do not sand very much, but rather to simply remove all the spots from the door and for this you use a sanding mat. Sanding mats cause the least damage and you can mattify the surface well. Afterwards you dust off again of course. Step 10: Finishing The door is finished with matt, semi-gloss or high-gloss paint. For indoors, semi-gloss paint is most often used and that is why this is what I use in my other video about painting a door. Water-based matt and semi-gloss are easy to process, but with high-gloss you have to be careful not to go back too much into the paint layer, because otherwise you will get matt spots in your paintwork that you will have to repaint afterwards. -------------------- I hope you find my explanation useful and if you have any questions, please let me know!
