Emptying garbage cans - that's his job. Maik is out on the streets every day collecting garbage in Freiburg. The job is colloquially known as garbage man, but the official term is garbage collector. He gets up every day at 4 a.m. and starts work at 5.30 a.m. Tuesday is particularly hard work because it is residual waste day and the route is particularly long. The fact that the garbage is often not properly separated and smells bad is the least of the problems. Cyclists and drivers jostle, the traffic is dangerous and Maik is often insulted or even threatened. Maik is employed by the Freiburg waste management and city cleaning service and is responsible for his driver and the second garbage collector on the road. His role is called foreman, for which he also receives a bonus. On Mondays and Tuesdays he disposes of residual waste, on Wednesdays and Thursdays paper and on Fridays organic waste. That's over 1000 tons a day that he has to empty. He walks about 25 km a day. After finishing work at his main job, he fills shelves in the supermarket two afternoons a week. Is it worth it? That is "Is it worth it?": One person, one job, one life. And at the end of the day, the question: Is it worth it? We accompany people in their careers and show their lives. Is it worth it to work for a salary and use it to finance your own life? What makes me happy about my work? We don't just compare salaries, we show how people live from their work. We are always looking for protagonists: If you also want to show how you live with your job, feel free to write to [email protected]! On a personal note: We are not infallible either - and although we make every effort to present every individual financial situation in a clear, correct and understandable way, we sometimes need help. The Bavarian State Association of Tax Advisors and Auditors always provides us with competent support in this regard - thank you very much for that!
