Mark Rafflenbeul is shocked: In the middle of winter, he discovers bark beetle larvae stretching and yawning under the bark of a tree. Nothing scares a forest owner as much as the little beetles that have been destroying spruce forests in Germany for the past three years. What will spring and the dry summer be like if the beetle larvae are already so active? The forest has never been in such a bad state as it is today. Whether in the Westerwald, the Harz, the Teutoburg Forest or the Eifel. Where trees once stood, the earth now lies fallow. And of the trees that are still standing, only one in five is healthy. Climate change is to blame. But all those who have previously made a good living from the forest are also to blame. And they, of all people, are now supposed to save the forest again with taxpayers' money. Yet state subsidies offer far too little incentive to create the forest of the future. After the Second World War, the timber industry relied on spruce trees. They grow quickly, produce straight trunks and are easy to fell with machines. But they are vulnerable - to extreme weather conditions and to fluctuations in the price of wood. Spruce is unsuitable for the forest of the future. But what will become of the lunar landscapes that are spreading more and more? What will the forest of the future look like, one that defies the increasing extremes of the weather and at the same time provides urgently needed timber? The price for this has now tripled and craft businesses are facing massive material shortages. One thing is certain: around a million jobs in Germany depend on the forest. ????
