Does climbing stairs hurt your knees? It's always a bit like that with age. We gain a lot of life experience and relaxation, but our body also shows us our limits time and time again. Osteoarthritis is one of the diseases that can quickly put a damper on our idea of eternal youth. Let me put it this way: If we get old enough, we'll all get osteoarthritis. And point 2: Not all osteoarthritis is symptomatic; it's estimated that around one in three people experience osteoarthritis symptoms. What exactly is osteoarthritis? To understand osteoarthritis, we need to take a closer look at the bones. We need shock absorbers to ensure that our movements run smoothly, in the truest sense of the word. If bones were simply rubbing against bones, we would feel pain with every step and would only be able to walk unevenly or not at all. These shock absorbers are formed by the cartilage that surrounds a bone. It absorbs shocks and ensures that no pain occurs when walking. As we get older, we often lose cartilage mass and this then leads to problems with the affected joints. To stay with the image of a shock absorber: In a car, the shock absorber also gets old at some point and then the car bangs and clatters when it has to drive through potholes. In theory, these potholes are every single step in humans, which our bone system has to absorb somehow. What symptoms occur with osteoarthritis? The first signs are sometimes slight pain in the joints after we have been inactive for a long time. After such breaks on the sofa or in bed at night, it is more difficult for us to become active again. We then feel pain in the affected joints occasionally and only for a short time. However, this can also happen the other way round: if we put too much strain on ourselves, we can also experience pain from overexertion. What is particularly bad is that the strain required for this decreases over time, meaning we are forced to be increasingly inactive. Another point: it is often referred to as "activated arthrosis". Deactivation is sometimes possible for a few weeks or months - even without therapy. How is arthrosis treated? Unfortunately, treating arthrosis often only means stopping further progression. Arthrosis cannot be cured or reversed; we can often only ensure that it does not get any worse. Depending on which joint is affected, doctors have various options at their disposal. Of course, we can use medication to relieve pain and combat inflammation in the joints. In addition, we can replace a joint surgically or completely stiffen it so that it no longer causes any problems. Exercise therapy or sport for arthrosis can help to relieve the joint by using more muscles. ▬ About this channel ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ With “Video Visit Dr. Weigl” you have found the current and medical-scientific channel that describes topics relating to pain, #medicine and #health in an understandable way but based on facts, guidelines and studies. ▬ Even more videos ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Osteoarthritis: My 5 tips for guaranteed pain reduction: https://bit.ly/5Arthrose-Tipps_Video Detecting thumb osteoarthritis in an X-ray: https://bit.ly/RhizarthroseRöntgen_Video Hip osteoarthritis explained in an understandable way: https://bit.ly/Hüftarthrose_Video Answer to the osteoarthritis LIE.
