Hi, we are Timo and Alina and exactly one year ago we picked up our motorhome from the port in Uruguay in South America. We plan to drive the Pan-American Highway with our motorhome. From Ushuaia, which is in the very south of Argentina, to Alaska. Our trip through South America got off to a great start. We explored the beautiful country of Uruguay with our camper and enjoyed van life to the full. We continued through Argentina. To start the Pan-American Highway, we first had to drive our camper all the way down to the south of Argentina... to the end of the world. On the way there, our streak of bad luck began. When we arrived in Buenos Aires, we fought with Corona for three weeks. After we felt healthy again, we finally headed south. And finally our destination... the end of the world was in sight. Ushuaia is a mecca for hiking enthusiasts and vanlifers. We headed north on Ruta 40 with our motorhome. We traveled a lot in Chile, not just in Argentina. So we spent New Year's Day and my birthday in Torres del Paine National Park. In Argentina, we went to the well-known destinations of El Calafate and El Chalten. Not far from El Calafate is Los Glaciares National Park with the famous Perito Moreno glacier. You can also stay a little longer in El Chalten. Unfortunately, bad luck struck again and Timo injured himself on the way down from climbing. That was one of the most difficult times for both of us on this tour. Physically and mentally. Countless hospital stays followed until it was finally confirmed that several ligaments in his foot had torn. A difficult time began for both of us in which we didn't really know how to deal with it. Suddenly I not only had to do everything in van life on my own, but also drive the large motorhome here in South America. And then we decided on Careterra Austral in Chile. To be honest, one of the best decisions ever. When we arrived in Bariloche, Timo started physiotherapy. Daily training gave him back his mobility and we were finally both able to sit behind the wheel again. In Chile, we continued with the camper to the Villarica volcano. A unique experience to spend the night at the foot of the volcano in your own camper. Best van life ever! Unfortunately, our camper broke down on the way north. Luckily, we were able to fix the problem ourselves. We passed the Paso de Agua Negra with our camper. The highest pass between Chile and Argentina that you can drive over with a vehicle. Near San Pedro de Atacama, we prepared ourselves for one of the greatest adventures of our trip. The lagoon route that leads from San Pedro in Chile to the Salar de Uyuni salt desert in Bolivia. That was by far our most intense off-road experience ever! This was followed by the largest salt desert in the world, which we could drive through normally with our camper. Bolivia surprised us! Nature is so diverse. We left the Pan-American Highway a long time ago because we really wanted to go to the Pantanal. The Pantanal is the largest wetland in the world and is partly located in Brazil. Unfortunately, we were not blessed with luck on the way there. At a parking lot, a woman drove into our camper from the street. Her brakes failed and she used our camper as a barrier to stop her car. We wanted to have the damage from the accident repaired in Paraguay. On the way there, we took the Igouzu waterfalls with us. In Paraguay, we had our camper repaired in Hohenau and also took the opportunity to get to know the country better. We are glad that we did it. Paraguay surprised us in a positive way. We took advantage of the good parts supply in the country to replace our broken air conditioning condenser and some wear and tear parts. We went over the dry Chaco to the Amazon lowlands of Bolivia. There, we had to test our patience and nerves again by crossing a river with our camper. But new country, new luck in Peru! Well, first of all, we had to replace our broken shock absorbers before we could really set off on our off-road adventure in the Andes in Peru. We are heading further north with our camper. Our vanlife journey is far from over. There are 12 more countries to follow up to Alaska. Be a part of it and subscribe to our Vanlife channel!
