In this episode we focus on the period just after Operation Market Garden. In the meantime, the Schuytgraaf district in Arnhem has been built; a neat and beautiful new residential area with nice gardens and playing children who do not suspect that they are playing tag on top of a mass grave. Despite the very intensive fighting, the Germans did not reach Elst, let alone the Nijmegen bridge. With archaeologist Martijn Reinders, Maarten visits the Breedlersestraat near Elst, they stop at a roadside with a special story. After the failure of Operation Market Garden, the Germans braced themselves for what might come, an entire area was mowed down: more than 100,000 people had to leave their homes and forced laborers were used to build new positions. A small part of these workers were volunteers: a group of these workers were housed in what is now the ROC in Velp. Together with Leo van Midden, Maarten visits this school. They also visit a bunker on the border of Gelderland. More about this program: https://www.omroepgelderland.nl/op-oo... #marketgarden #maartenvanrossem #omroepgld
