'The most important cards Moscow is playing are the anti-LGBTI card and the Europe-is-war card,' says former Moscow correspondent Michel Krielaars. The same cards are manifesting themselves in the elections in Moldova and Georgia. Eastern Europe expert Marina Ohanjanyan says of the winning Georgian party: 'They are still talking about joining the EU and that pro-Western course. They just don't act on it.' Krielaars draws a parallel with the war in Ukraine: 'Georgia officially takes a neutral position in the war with Ukraine. But of course they are terrified of what could happen.' Forms of Russian influence such as disinformation, sabotage and bribery played a major role, because the accession requirements that the EU imposes on Georgia directly affect the power base of oligarch and leader of the Georgian Dream, Bidzina Ivanishvili. 'I think that there is also a kind of coinciding interest with Russia here,' says Krielaars. The edge, the shell around Europe, of course anything can go wrong there. And it is in Russia's interest to create that chaos everywhere.' ➡ Subscribe to not miss anything and join the conversation: http://bit.ly/buitenhof-abonneren ➡ Watch another video about international relations: https://bit.ly/buitenhofyt-ib This video is from the broadcast of Buitenhof on October 27, 2024: https://bit.ly/buitenhof-27-okt-24 About Buitenhof: Buitenhof discusses politics and current affairs in in-depth interviews, debates or discussions.
