NPK Let's start by understanding what NPK fertilizer is. These are fertilizers that have in their formulation: Nitrogen (represented by the letter N), Phosphorus (represented by the letter P) and Potassium (represented by the letter K), which are macro nutrients, that is, the nutrients that plants need in greater quantities to develop. These fertilizers are produced by the industry with different formulations, for example, NPK 10-10-10 has 10 parts nitrogen, 10 parts phosphorus and 10 parts potassium, therefore it is a maintenance fertilizer, because it has equal parts of these nutrients. NPK 4-14-8 has 4 parts nitrogen, 14 parts phosphorus and 8 parts potassium, therefore a fertilizer suitable for stimulating flowering. These formulas are developed in a very precise and balanced way and in our case we will make a homemade fertilizer that will not be as exact in the quantities of each nutrient, but it is a way of nourishing our plants at low cost and consciously disposing of remains. of food. RECIPE To offer these NPK nutrients we will use coffee grounds, without added sugar, which will be the source of nitrogen and phosphorus; banana peels which will be a source of potassium; and eggshells, which are sources of calcium and phosphorus. We will also use cinnamon powder, which has a fungicidal effect and several benefits for plants. To prepare the fertilizer we will use: 1 liter of water 4 washed eggshells 4 chopped banana peels 3 tablespoons of coffee grounds 1 tablespoon of cinnamon powder HOW TO DO IT We will put all the ingredients in the blender and blend well until the food is crushed as much as possible. The second step is to place this liquid in a bottle that has a larger capacity than the one we are producing, because this fertilizer will ferment and form a gas inside the bottle, and if we don't leave space for the gas, the bottle could burst. Remembering that you need to wash the bottle well and sterilize it with hot water before using it. We can use a glass bottle or PET bottle. Once ready, we need to let the fertilizer rest for 4 to 7 days for fermentation to occur, and only after that can we use our fertilizer. You need to leave it in a cool place, out of the sun and shake it once a day to mix the ingredients well. After the fertilizer rests for the period I mentioned, we will strain the liquid and dilute it with another 1 liter of water to be able to use it. HOW TO USE Once the fertilizer is ready, it is ideal to use it within three days, so if you have few plants, you can make half the recipe. Or you can store the fertilizer for up to 30 days in the refrigerator. It can be used on all plants, including vegetable gardens, fruit trees, potted plants or garden plants, being used directly on the soil, to water once a month. As it is a homemade fertilizer, it does not have an exact amount of use, so put a larger amount in larger pots and a little less in smaller pots. And as the fertilizer is well diluted, you won't have any problems with burning your plant. Only for succulents you can make a greater dilution, to make it even weaker. DISADVANTAGE The disadvantage is that it is not a complete fertilizer or with balanced proportions of each nutrient. We don't know exactly how much nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium there is. Therefore, the solution is to alternate the use of this organic fertilizer with the use of other more complete fertilizers, such as Bokashi, which I always recommend and use on my plants, which is an organic option and has nitrogen in addition to its composition. , phosphorus and potassium, there is boron, manganese, iron, zinc, sulfur and so on... So you can make your own homemade fertilizer because it practically costs nothing, and we are still consciously disposing of things that would otherwise go to waste, but remember that it is important to supplement your plants’ nutrition.
