Truong Vu, real name Huynh Van Ngoanh, born February 25, 1963, is a famous Chinese-American overseas singer of Vietnamese golden music and love songs from 1954-1975. Truong Vu's real name is Huynh Van Ngoanh, born February 25, 1963 in Vinh Chau district, Bac Lieu province (now Vinh Chau town, Soc Trang province). He is the fifth child in a family of six children of Chaozhou origin who came to Vietnam to make a living many generations ago. In 1983, he crossed the border and stayed at Pulao Bidong refugee camp, Philippines for more than a year, then settled in Los Angeles. During his time in Los Angeles, he listened to old music tapes recorded from his homeland by singers Che Linh and Duy Khanh, which greatly influenced his future career. After that, Truong Vu enrolled in high school but dropped out because he was too passionate about singing. By chance, singer Chung Tu Luu heard him sing and invited him to collaborate with the Phuong Hoang Center and the Ca Dao Center. At first, recording was difficult because the languages he often used in daily communication were Teochew and Cantonese. As for Vietnamese, he only understood simple words. According to his confession, the person who explained the songs he was about to record and guided him in pronouncing Vietnamese was his girlfriend named Anh Thu. In addition, she was also the one who encouraged and supported him in his singing career. During his early career, he studied with musician Duy Khanh for 5 years, receiving guidance on music theory and pronunciation.
