He traveled to Europe, America, and India to cure a terminal illness. During that time, he studied medicine at Columbia University and became the first Japanese person to teach yoga. After returning to Japan, he became president of the Tokyo Jitsugyo Bank and an executive at Dai Nippon Flour Mills (now Nisshin Flour Mills), but in 1919, he gave up all his positions and turned to street preaching.
