What is now Altenburg Land has been settled by Slavs since the early Middle Ages. Sorbian tribes farmed and raised livestock on forest-free areas. In the middle of the 12th century, the Swabian-born Staufers expanded their sphere of influence to include these areas. Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa secured the power he had gained by elevating his previously unfree servants, the Imperial Ministerials, to knights and assigning them tasks. They were to lead the new settlement, push back existing Slavic influences, enforce German law, collect taxes and protect the country from enemies. As a result, a network of small fortifications was created in the Pleißenland in the 12th and 13th centuries. The clearing of large areas of land, the creation of villages and the construction of castles to secure the new lands shaped development from then on. Posterstein Castle is one of the castles built during this period. One of Barbarossa's imperial ministerials was called Gerhardus de Nubudiz. His name appeared in 1143 in the witness list of a document by Conrad III. The name also appeared in later documents with different spellings. In 1191, the names of Gerhardo de Nwbodicz and his mother Mechthilde appeared in a document by Henry VI. In the confirmation of this document by the Bishop of Naumburg, both are now called "Mechthilde de Steinne et filio Gerhardo". This is the first documented mention of Posterstein as "vom Steinne" and at the same time the last such mention of the Nöbdenitz ministerials. The settlement of the same name in Nöbdenitz - a flat area surrounded by water - belonged to the Posterstein estate until 1575. A mountain spur just two kilometers away above the Sprotte river had evidently proven to be the most strategically advantageous fortification option. _______________________ IMPRINT Daniela Bensch Email: [email protected] VAT identification number: DE231129701 Person responsible for content according to § 55 II RStV: Daniela Bensch Leipzig Editing program: Adobe Premiere Pro Camera: Canon EOS M50 Mark II Music: YouTube Creative Tool
