When the Center for Public Opinion Research conducted a survey on the meaning of holidays ten years ago, October 28 reigned supreme and even beat Christmas Day. The same results were confirmed by similar research in 2019. We are probably the only nation in the world that celebrates the creation of a state that has not existed for several decades. If we have to ask why this is, we have no choice but to admit that we don't have many other options to celebrate. First we were part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, then after twenty years of independent statehood we found ourselves first under German tutelage, then under communist tutelage. We are only now fully enjoying our freedom. The fact that we perceive today's Czech Republic as a continuation of Czechoslovakia is due to the fact that from the beginning we considered Czechoslovakia to be a Czech state, although it was also home to Germans, Slovaks, Poles, Ruthenians and Jews. We gradually got rid of all these nations, often at the cost of losing territory. This is also the reason why Czechoslovakia is called "the state that failed" by some historians.
