On the night of Thursday (December 1st) at around 3:28 a.m., the fire department was alerted to a fire in the attic of an apartment building on Falkensteinstrasse. Several calls had raised the alarm and reported flames and smoke from the attic of the three-and-a-half-story building. The roof structure of the residential building had caught fire for unknown reasons and was almost destroyed by the flames. The police had already evacuated five of the six residents from the building before the firefighters arrived. The evacuation also affected the neighboring building. There was one person in the burning attic who was rescued via the rear part of the building using a stepladder. After receiving first aid from the emergency services, the man was taken to hospital with suspected smoke inhalation. The fire was fought via the stairwell and a turntable ladder. A drone was used to support the operations management. The fire department was on site with almost 60 emergency personnel. The police have begun an investigation into the cause of the fire. Five residents of the building where the fire broke out and residents of the adjacent building were accommodated and cared for in a STOAG bus. The city of Oberhausen says it will provide those affected with alternative accommodation if necessary.
