We want to find out which cream meets these criteria. We try six spreads: hazelnut-nougat cream from market leader Nutella, hazelnut cream from Milka, the cheap discounter hazelnut-nougat creams "Nusskati" from Aldi and "Choco Nussa" from Lidl, as well as the more expensive newcomer organic nut spreads "Choco Crush" from Naughty Nuts and "Wholey Sh*t!" from the online shop Wholeyorganics. HALLOWEEN CREAMS CONTAIN A LOT OF SUGAR AND FAT Consumer advocate Nora Dittrich criticizes the high sugar and fat content of conventional products. From a nutritional point of view, this is particularly bad for children, because with three to four spoonfuls of such a cream they quickly reach the recommended daily limit for sugar or even exceed it. Sugar and fat predominate, so the cocoa and nut content is lower. The nougat creams Nutella, Nusskati and Choco Nussa have a nut content of 13 percent, while the hazelnut cream Milka only has 5 percent. The ingredient distribution in the two organic nut creams is completely different: Dittrich notices the high nut content of over 50 percent. However, this also comes with a correspondingly higher price. The two products also contain less than half as much sugar as the other creams. However, they still contain sugary ingredients such as coconut blossom sugar or dates. SUSTAINABLY PRODUCED RAW MATERIALS FOR NUT CREAMS Almost all nut creams have seals that indicate sustainably produced raw materials such as hazelnuts, cocoa and palm oil. Palm oil makes the creams spreadable. Nutella and the two discounter nut creams are made with RSPO-certified, i.e. sustainable palm oil, while Milka uses sunflower oil. Wholey Sh*t! contains coconut oil. Naughty Nuts does not use any added oil. CHOCOLATE CREAM EXAMINATION IN THE LABORATORY The six products are sent to an independent food laboratory. This is because harmful substances have repeatedly been found in such spreads. Consumer advocate Nora Dittrich warns that nuts and nut products are susceptible to carcinogenic mold toxins. The expert also points out mineral oil compounds that can pass from the packaging material into food and fat contaminants that can arise when fats and oils are processed and heated. Both substances are also suspected of being carcinogenic. However, according to laboratory results, all of our tested products are free of mold toxins and suspected carcinogenic mineral oils. Traces of saturated mineral oils were found in four samples. Five products contained fat contaminants far below the legal maximum level. Completely free of all the contaminants tested: the organic nut butter from Wholeyorganics. WINNER IN THE TASTE TEST Our taste testers evaluate appearance, smell, consistency and taste. They like "Nusskati" from Aldi best, followed by "Wholey Sh!t", Nutella and Naughty Nuts. The Lidl version is also satisfactory. The testers are not convinced by the Milka product.
