Newspaper boys were an indispensable attribute of all large cities of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Despite the fact that these newspapers themselves and the entire cultural mythology of that time idealized the image of a newsboy, depicting him as a typical representative of brave youth, tirelessly working and entrepreneurially ingeniously paving his way to a bright future, in fact these children were the most numerous and most unfortunate and exploited professional group of the urban population. And today my story is about how these boys once stood up to fight for their rights and were able to force the newspaper giants, who kept them in economic bondage, to retreat.
