In 1983 Rossella Aquilanti moved to Pentedattilo, a ghost town in southern Italy. Today, aged 63, she needs help in the countryside. In a refugee centre she met Maka Tounkara, a young farmer from Mali who ended up moving in with her. The high unemployment rate in Calabria means that many young people are forced to leave this region. However, Rossella lives happily here in the paradise she has created, with 20 goats, some olive trees and a beautiful landscape. Maka arrived in Italy on a small boat with other migrants. Working with Rossella is a great opportunity for him, as it allows him to send money to his fiancée in Mali. Despite their differences, they both have a great appreciation for each other and work together side by side. The abandonment of the village of Pentedattilo is becoming more and more evident. Only once a year does it come to life again, when tourists climb the steep path up the hills of Calabria to its church. The Pentedattilo short film festival is held there - an important event for film lovers and former residents. Rossella and Maka are convinced that their simple, self-sufficient life can serve as an inspiration to others. The last inhabitants of Pentedattilo hope that other young people and migrants will follow their example and breathe new life into Italy's ghost towns. #dwdocumentary #documentary #italy #villages ـــــ DW Documentary brings you information beyond the headlines.
