Nerija fort, where the Lithuanian Maritime Museum is located, is the only such 19th-century fortress. the object of the Prussian military heritage in Lithuania of the second half. Military fortifications in Kopgali aimed to protect the port of Klaipėda from an unexpected invasion of the enemy from the sea side. They prevented the enemy from disembarking in Neria and attacking the city of Klaipėda from the less protected side of the lagoon.
