Neglinka is an underground river in the area of Tsvetnoy Boulevard, a kind of Klondike of various finds and a place where the undergrounds of Moscow give birth to scary urban legends. The Neglinka River in Moscow is the second most important river in the capital, at the mouth of which a wooden city was founded in the 12th century. Today, Neglinka is an underground river of Moscow. By 1725, the city's population had grown and began to use the river to drain sewage from their homes, which was well described by the St. Petersburg general Volkov, who was caught in Moscow during the February thaw. "I am truly afraid that I will fall ill in such a precipitous place: only two days have passed since the thaw began, but from the sewage here, known to you, such a balsam smell and such a darkness has become that it is impossible to leave the hut." The authorities fought against illegal drainage, but all in vain, the people did not respond to the decrees. In the spring, Moscow breathed the stench of once clean rivers. Therefore, in the 18th century, they decided to improve the river and partially turn it into a canal, which corresponded to the ideas of the Enlightenment about beauty, harmony and work with water. The work began in the summer of 1776, and by 1796, almost the entire Neglinka River had been transformed into an engineering structure consisting of open and closed canals and several pools decorated with stone embankments with metal gratings. Muscovites could once see the Samotechny Pond, the Kaplya and Sinichka rivers, but gradually the improvement reached the distant outskirts of the city. Now the Neglinka is de facto an underground river, only a pond in the area of Seleznevskaya Street with the fascinating name of Antropovy Pits remains on the surface. Today I will show you the legendary Moscow dungeon and one rare plan of Moscow, dated 1811. You will see those sights of the city that are reliably hidden from the gaze of the Moscow public.
