About :

Long before Homo sapiens roamed the earth, Neanderthals lived in Eurasia. With the help of new archaeological methods, paleoanthropologists in England and France have shed new light on our relatives. Long ago, the first human groups settled on the vast plains of the Eurasian continent, which were temporarily covered in ice. The now extinct Neanderthals were the most numerous species in the northwest of what is now Europe, an area that stretched from northern France, across the Belgian coast and the Channel Islands to southern England. During the last Ice Age, the North Sea was permanently frozen and the English Channel was a small river that could easily be crossed on foot. Neanderthals lived in close connection with this constantly changing nature, which offered them everything they needed to survive: meat from prey animals, edible wild plants, water and firewood for cooking and heating. How did these early humans develop over almost 300,000 years and how did they live until they finally became extinct in contact with Homo sapiens around 40,000 years ago? Based on the results of new research, the documentary examines the life of several Neanderthal populations and presents important archaeological sites in northern France, southern England and on the island of Jersey, which were inhabited by these early humans for 250,000 years. Renowned researchers such as British paleoanthropologist Chris Stringer and Frenchman Ludovic Slimak explain the way of life, but also the cognitive abilities of the Neanderthals: were they capable of structured thought? Did they have cultures, languages, societies? What form of intelligence and what adaptation strategies ensured that they could survive over an extremely long period of almost 300,000 years? And how great are the similarities between Neanderthals and modern humans? ------------------------------------------------------- DW Documentary brings you information beyond the headlines.
