Every good car enthusiast likes mechanics. And even dares to do small things… or big ones. But to be successful in our forays into mechanics, three things are needed: Patience, knowledge… and good tools. Did you know that we have a members area? It costs €0.99… YouTube won’t let me go any cheaper. And what can you see there? Well, videos like this one, very personal. In the members area I have talked about my favourite books, the things I have hanging at home… even how I was fired! Things that I wouldn’t dare to tell in the open. Become a member of this channel to enjoy the benefits: / hermetic garage But the members of GH have decided to “pardon” a video so that everyone can see it and they have chosen this one. Honestly, I would have chosen another one, but what the members say, and there are already more than 2,000 of us, is the gospel. In the video I have only removed what we call the introduction and the farewell, the rest is as it is. Ah! And as always I have added the car of the day and the consulting room. The thing is that in the members area there is no car of the day, there is a question of the day, because the truth is that we talk a lot… how many hours of sleep you take away from me! I was telling you that three things are needed. Let’s get to it: Patience. First, patience. My mother, one of the most intelligent people I have ever met, always said that “patience is the mother of science”… and of mechanics. Knowledge. You need experience, a friend who understands or an iPad. The first thing is a question of time. Don’t force anything, don’t use the hammer to “convince” a piece to come in and little by little you will learn. A friend who knows is a treasure… and I don’t have a friend who knows… I have several! Take care of them. When they come to help me I compensate them well… nothing better than a good ham and a good wine to “pay” for that help… and so they come back. And what is the iPad for? Because YouTube is a goldmine and you will find tutorials for everything. So keep an iPad handy. I don’t have one in the workshop, but I do in the kitchen… in my new divorce stage I have had to refresh my culinary knowledge. And I made a luxury Madrid stew using the iPad. Tools. Adequate and varied. There are tools that you use once every two or three years… but that time, they save your life. Rather than reviewing the most necessary, I am going to review what I have. It is not in order of priority, it will be a bit disorganized, sorry. Depending on your needs, there will be more or less important things. Here we go: 1. Music and mobile phone holder. I was telling my daughter… music is essential. And a mobile phone holder to see the screen and use with your voice. 2. Workshop paper and trash. A big, big trash can, workshop paper and microfiber cloths. 3. Tool cart. A good idea if you eventually have to take the tools somewhere. Good pliers and sets of open-end wrenches, ring spanners, angled spanners and socket wrenches are essential… 4. Briefcase, set of wrenches. Large and small. I even have one in inch size. 5. Hydraulic jack. Fast and safe… 6. Jack stands. Safety first! 7. Compressor. If you have bikes, essential. 8. Pressure gauges. I have two… 9. Work light. To see well. It also serves as an extension cord. 10. Bench vice. Essential. 11. Sharpener. Mine costs 31 euros… 12. Pedestal drill. Or failing that, a stand. 12+1. Nylon hammer. Not the same. 14. Screwdriver. A real lifesaver. 15. Screwdrivers. Few and of quality, like Allen keys. 16. 90-degree screwdriver. It’s a bad one, but it has saved me more than once. 17. Flexo with magnet. What I’m telling you, you’re not going to use it almost ever, but one day it’s going to save your life. 18. Torque wrenches. The difference between a good mechanic and a bad one. 19. Hand fuel pump. If you have a dirt bike, a good investment. 20. Something to drink. And without alcohol! 21. Folding bike. On the circuits, it gives you life. Car of the day. In this video, my Seat 850, with which I learned so much, by force, about mechanics, would fit as the car of the day. But I don’t want to repeat myself, so I’m going to choose the R4, because I had one with which I learned even more about mechanics than with the 850… and I made money!
