At the age of seven he lost his mother, an experience that had a profound impact on him and ultimately cost him his joy in life. As a teenager, however, he discovered Zen Buddhism, then studied Japanese studies and philosophy, and at the age of 22 traveled to Japan for the first time, a country that is very closed to strangers. But Muhō Nölke returned, lived in a Buddhist monastery, was ordained as a monk, and was eventually appointed Zen master by his teacher. In 2002, he was even appointed abbot of a Zen monastery in the Japanese mountains.
