You could imagine it like a giant bathtub: a dam is built around an area of 73 hectares with overflows, water gauges and all the trimmings. When it rains, the water collects in it. If they are drained, they release massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the air. Twelve percent of CO2 emissions in the peat-rich Schleswig-Holstein come from drained peatlands. If they are renaturalized, however, the opposite occurs: not only are the emissions stopped, the growing peat moss also binds more carbon dioxide from the air. Rewetting drained peatlands is therefore an important climate task. A task for the young expert Janis Ahrens. The renaturation of drained moors is a complex job: soil analysis and reptile protection, construction planning and construction supervision, Janis Ahrens is responsible for the entire process. He used to collect garbage and demonstrate against Castor transports, today the qualified conservationist and landscape planner is professionally committed to the environment. He says he is happy that he does not have to shift responsibility for the climate onto politics and society. He is more interested in doing something about it himself.
