Blast furnaces, mines and steel - all of this can be found on an unusual model railway layout in Wuppertal. The "Reviermodule" association shows the mining industry in miniature. The association's members get inspiration from the Henrichshütte Museum, where original models are located. The film shows the association's H0 layout with the unusually large industrial buildings. Mine, blast furnace - everything was built by the association's members themselves. Layouts like these are rare, because model railway layouts usually show idyllic scenes - but here the hard work in the mining area is in the foreground. The model is accordingly realistic; rusty pipes, sooty facilities, it looks as if coal and ore are actually being processed here. The Henrichshütte Museum in Hattingen is a model for the model railway layout. Eisenbahn-Romantik also shows the oldest blast furnace in the mining area - a 55-meter-high monster. The museum shows the work processes in an iron and steel works, but the focus is on the people who worked here. The film also addresses the social issues of structural change in the Ruhr region. The association's model railway continues to grow, and a large steelworks is due to be built soon. Model maker Jörg Schmidt says it could be years before the model of the Ruhr region is finished - but as is the case with model railways, there is always something new to add.
