According to reports, Varam Keutenedjian arrived in Brazil around 1920. He worked as a peddler and then at the Gasparian company. He married one of his partners, Dona Claudina. Varam was one of the pioneers of the Brazilian automobile industry. He was the owner of Laníficio Varam, now Grupo Textil Vicunha, and Hotel Danúbio, in addition to numerous companies. In 1948, Varam Motores produced Nash cars and trucks in São Bernardo do Campo, known as the “Brazilian Detroit”. Those who visit or frequent the beaches of Cocanha, Mococa and Massaguaçu, in the northern region of Caraguá, can see two islands in front of them: Ilhote da Cocanha and Ilha do Tamanduá. The Ilhote da Cocanha, which is very close to the beach of the same name, was once considered one of the most popular islands in São Paulo society in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, and was even coveted by singer Roberto Carlos, who showed interest in acquiring it in the 1970s. In the 1950s, the island belonged to the Armenian Keutenedjian family, one of the most important in the capital, owner of Varam Motores, one of the pioneering companies in the Brazilian automobile industry (read text below), Hotel Danúbio and Tecelagem Varam (today, Vicunha textiles). A millionaire, Mr. Marcos Varam Keutenedjian transformed the Ilhote da Cocanha into his paradise by the sea. At the time, Santos was the favorite place for São Paulo residents, and Guarujá was beginning to emerge as a beachside option. To make things stand out, the island gained a large house on its top that offered a view of the most beautiful beaches of Cocanha, Massaguaçu, Mococa and Tabatinga; lighting, provided by a powerful generator, illuminated the gardens, the house and the access between the pier and the mansion. The little road was paved, something rare in the cities and roads of the region. An imported jeep transported people between the pier and the residence at the top of the island. A spring supplied water to the large house. The owner, Marcos, loved fishing. On weekends, he would gather the cream of São Paulo society on the Ilhote da Cocanha. Sometimes, when he went fishing in the Amazon or Mato Grosso, he would take with him the caiçara Epifânio de Oliveira Carlota, better known as João Ité, who coordinated the construction of the house on the Ilhote da Cocanha and was a sort of caretaker for the owner. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Do you know of any cool places you would like to suggest we explore? leave a comment --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ????
