There is the bachelor's cycle which lasts 3 years, the master's cycle which lasts 3 years, and finally the specialization cycle which lasts between 3 and 6 years depending on the specialty you choose. You should know that medical studies in Belgium are very selective. As in all countries. The selection is made before entering the first year, unlike in France where the selection is made when moving to the second year. The selection is made by a well-known entrance exam, organized by ARES. This exam concerns all those who wish to obtain a Belgian medical degree. Whether you have passed your baccalaureate in Belgium or abroad, whether you are already a qualified doctor or still a student, you must pass this entrance exam. Since 2017, Belgian law requires anyone wishing to obtain a medical degree to pass this single exam. If you have just passed your baccalaureate, this exam is the only barrier to being admitted to the faculty of medicine. After passing it, you will no longer have such a competitive exam until the end of your training. If you are a foreign doctor or a medical student outside the European Union, you can request reclassification in the second cycle if you pass this exam. Foreign doctors who pass are generally ranked 5th in or 6th year and continue like their Belgian colleagues. This exam therefore remains the best way if you want to practice medicine in Belgium. All other options are certifications or training courses that do not give you the Belgian doctor's diploma and do not allow you to practice medicine in Belgium. Even the equivalences that you may have do not allow you to practice medicine directly, you will need authorization from the federal public service (SPF) and registration with the order of physicians to practice medicine.
