Pauline Joyce Hutchison Meyer was born in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, on June 4, 1943. That same year, her father went into the Army and served in World War II. She had a troubled childhood, as she was abused by her own father. After graduating from O'Fallon Technical High School in St. Louis, she married a car salesman, but their marriage lasted only five years. After the divorce, Pauline met Dave Mayer, whom she married on January 7, 1967, and had four children.
