The audiobook "Maxima culpa" reveals the backstage of the investigation into Karol Wojtyła's responsibility for covering up sexual abuse committed by clergy. Dutch journalist Ekke Overbeek follows the documents that have survived in the archives, describes the amnesia that has gripped the "badly affected", and asks whether, in light of the evidence collected, it is possible to maintain the thesis that the pope was deceived by Vatican officials. Did Karol Wojtyła know about pedophilia among priests before he became pope? Did he help them avoid responsibility? Unfortunately, the answer is yes. He knew the problem from the time when he was the archbishop of Krakow. As the Bishop of Kraków, Karol Wojtyła often found himself face to face with priests who admitted to molesting children. He could not therefore think that the accusations against them were false. Despite this, the future pope allowed the multiple recidivist Surgent and the multiple rapist Loranc to remain as pastors. Surgent even retained the right to teach religion. He helped Bolesław Saduś avoid responsibility by transferring him abroad, where his career flourished. Maybe these were all secret police provocations intended to compromise the church and the future pope? There is no indication that the communists were fabricating evidence against these clergymen. On the contrary: the priests often avoided trials, even though the police and the Security Service had hard evidence against them. The authorities were unable to use the accusations of paedophilia for propaganda purposes precisely because the Church rejected them as alleged provocations. Ekke Overbeek, a Dutch journalist and author of the famous book "Be Afraid. Victims of Pedophilia in the Polish Church Speak Out takes us behind the scenes of his investigation into the responsibility of the Metropolitan of Krakow for covering up pedophilia among the clergy subordinate to him. He traces the documents that have survived in the archives, reaches the places where the scandals from years ago took place and their victims. He describes the collective amnesia that has gripped the "badly affected", asks whether in light of the evidence gathered, it is possible to maintain the thesis about the good Pope, deceived by Vatican officials, who for a very long time knew nothing about the pathologies that were consuming the Church. However, it would be unfair to present John Paul II as the sole perpetrator of all evil. He himself was a child of his times, of his country and of his Church. To molest children on such a scale, a society was needed - authoritarian, intimidated and violent. In this, unintended, sense, John Paul II was right when he said that "society as a whole" is responsible for the molestation of children in the Church.
