The Malmbanan is our busiest railway and one of Sweden's most important railways for the transport of people and goods. Passenger trains, freight trains and ore trains run on the 50-mile long route between Boden and the Riksgränsen and on to Narvik in Norway. Malmbanan is the only railway in Sweden that allows a 30 ton axle load, which means 8,600 ton heavy and 750 meter long trains with a total of 68 carriages. Between Kiruna and Narvik there are today a total of 22 ore trains per day in both directions and between Malmberget and Luleå ten trains per day. The requirements increase with longer and heavier trains on the route. Since the Malmbanan is single-track, the railway yards have a central role in order for traffic to be carried out with good capacity. The ore track continues to play a critical role in both regional and national growth.
