In search of the 101 best mountains. 11/101 Rotwand in the Rosengarten in the Dolomites, South Tyrol Have you ever been to South Tyrol? What did you do? Were you there hiking or skiing? Please leave me a comment. :) We start the day at the picturesque Karersee. Behind the turquoise-blue water, the Latemar towers up. The lake is one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in the Alps and is usually a popular destination. If you want to enjoy the idyll alone, you should use the early morning hours to visit. We continue to the Rotwand in the Rosengarten massif. We take the cable car in Carezza for the first few meters up. Then we walk along under the imposing rock face through a cirque and finally start the crossing. The lift ride makes the first part quite comfortable. This is followed by a steep hiking trail. Always in view: the 400 m high west face of the Rotwand. Everything that shimmers yellow is overhanging. This makes climbing on the wall quite difficult. In addition, it is classic Dolomite climbing, so bolts are not used. Our mountain guide Erich from the Rosengarten Alpine Center was the first to climb a route on the west face. Today he accompanies us through the beginner-friendly via ferrata and explains how beginners should prepare for their first tour. If in doubt, it is best to take a mountain guide with you for your first attempts on the via ferrata or attend a via ferrata course. The ascent is not particularly difficult (A/B). However, fog sets in and at the highest point of the Rotwand, the third highest point of the Rosengarten, we are unfortunately denied the panorama. The view from up here could be so good. You could see the Ortler group. The Ötztal and Zillertal Alps would normally be visible on the horizon and the Sella massif and the Marmolada should also be visible. At least the fog clears a little on the descent. Then we can at least see other parts of the Rosengarten. But we can't just enjoy the view. Because concentration is required again. The key point of the mountain tour is still to come. A C-section leads up a steep wall. For me, that is a real thrill. At the end, there is a stop for refreshments with a view and delicious South Tyrolean cheese dumplings. A good end to the tour!
