Lung diseases represent a major public health challenge, causing 17% of deaths globally and profoundly affecting the quality of life of those who suffer from them. At the 25th National Congress of Pneumology, held in Milan, important innovations in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as asthma, COPD, lung cancer, pulmonary hypertension, and pulmonary fibrosis were presented. The event highlighted the urgency of an innovative approach to address these diseases, especially in light of the aging population. A very important theme was gender medicine, which studies differences related to sex and gender to personalize care. Thanks to the contribution of a multidisciplinary task force, it emerged how these factors can influence the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases. The initiative attracted the interest of many young professionals, signaling a promising future for research and clinical application. Attention then focused on the risks associated with tobacco use among young people, with worrying data showing an increase in the use of electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products, often mistakenly perceived as harmless. This trend, encouraged by attractive marketing strategies, hides serious health risks, including nicotine addiction and damage to brain development. Prevention campaigns must be intensified to combat the phenomenon and protect new generations. Finally, the congress highlighted the importance of early diagnosis and targeted treatment for conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a disease that affects millions of Italians but often remains underdiagnosed. The creation of a collaborative network between general practitioners and specialists is crucial to ensure timely and effective diagnostic and therapeutic pathways.
