"It is very important to hear what the teachers say," says Mantas Karanauskas, a teacher at the Vilnius Balsiai Pro-Gymnasium, winner of the Teacher of the Year Award. Looking at the criticized Lithuanian education system, the pedagogue urges those responsible for it to listen more carefully to teachers and their warnings. The daily "Bernardinai.lt" continues the series of documentaries "Teachers: unusual choices and everyday stories". In the third episode, geography teacher M. Karanauskas tells how he became interested in geography, what he does to get students interested in it, and what problems he sees in the education system while working as a teacher. M. Karanauskas became interested in the science of geography while he was still sitting on a school bench - the young man was interested not only in the material being taught, but also in the inspiring teachers. Later, when it came time to choose a field of study, it was geography that became the final choice that has followed him to this day, so he enrolled in geography pedagogy at the former Lithuanian University of Education. "I found the work of a teacher very interesting, but also responsible and very difficult, but this did not deter me. When I was in the twelfth grade, I started thinking about what I could study. Among the options were media studies, but geography won out. All that remained was to choose a university and start studying. It was probably due to the two components and two great teachers, one taught up to tenth grade, the other from eleventh to twelfth. Another reason is that I was hooked on the educational subject itself, and I felt that this was the area that interested me. Until now, I have discovered something new both in my own learning and in teaching my students," says the twelve-year-old teacher happily. M. Karanauskas returned to his native school as a future teacher when he was in the fourth grade - through professional practice. The successful experience soon refined the answer for the future. "Then there was an old study program, and it was only in the fourth year that the teacher could go to the school to try to teach the first lessons. I was often asked in my first, second and third year: "Manta, are you going to be a teacher?" I didn't have an answer to that until I returned to my native Šeduva high school in my fourth year, did a month-long internship and realized that I like not only geography, but also leading lessons," he says. However, the teacher does not remember the first lessons very happily. "It was hot, I was covered in sweat, not only my vocal chords, but also my hands and legs were shaking. The first time it was difficult to stand in front of the class, the next time it was a little easier", assures M. Karanauskas.
