On March 20, 1989, an accident occurred at the Jonava factory, which became the biggest ecological disaster in the history of Lithuania. A fire broke out after 7,500 tons of ammonia was spilled. Chemical clouds flooded the sky. As with Chernobyl, at first no one knew how to deal with this disaster.
