Construction work on the Bad Deutsch-Altenburg pilot project began in February 2012. The aim of the project was to test river engineering measures for the long-term protection of the national park and inland shipping. In the project section, bank removal, connection of tributaries, optimization of low water regulation and granulometric bed improvement to stabilize the riverbed were implemented together for the first time. The integrative planning approach is used nationally and internationally as best practice for planning projects. The various interest groups were involved via an accompanying stakeholder forum. The entire construction period was documented on film. After around 2.5 years, the project was successfully completed in July 2014. Scientific monitoring of the implemented measures will continue in the coming years. River KM 1884.5-1887.5
