The Knights Templar were a Christian military order founded in the 12th century during the Crusades, with the initial purpose of protecting Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land. The order was established in 1119 in Jerusalem by Hugh de Payens and other French nobles. Soon, the Templars became one of the most powerful and wealthy institutions of the Middle Ages, thanks to donations of land, money and property. They had a well-defined hierarchical structure and were committed to a life of obedience, poverty and chastity, like other religious orders of the time. For two centuries, the Templars actively participated in the Crusades and in the defense of Christian territories in the Holy Land. Their reputation as skilled warriors grew, and they also played an important role in the European economy, acting as moneylenders and administrators of property. However, by the end of the 13th century, the order began to lose influence due to a number of factors, including the failure of the Crusades, conflicts with other powers, and the envy and greed of some political and religious leaders. In 1307, King Philip IV of France, in alliance with Pope Clement V, ordered the mass arrest of the Templars on charges of heresy, sodomy, and other supposedly heretical practices. Following their arrest, many Templars were tortured, and some confessed under duress, though many denied the charges against them. In 1312, Pope Clement V officially dissolved the Order of the Temple, and its assets were confiscated by the crown and the Church.
