More information about the association and its animal welfare work can be found at www.kitmir.de The plight of street animals in many southern and eastern European countries is great. This is also the case in Turkey, where our association Kitmir Tierhilfe Demirtas is active. In cooperation with other local animal welfare workers, a tour is carried out twice a week through the mountains, where many hungry four-legged animals roam the forests in search of food. But what many of them long for much more is human affection. In addition to dry food, the four-legged animals are also given cooked bulgur and chicken so that they put on enough fat to survive the icy winters, when life in the mountains becomes a struggle for survival. On each tour, around 30 feeding stations are filled and over 100 animals are fed. It takes at least 8 hours to visit all of the feeding stations, because in the mountains we have to contend with poor road conditions and high snowdrifts in winter. The chicken is a very special highlight for the starving animals and is of course eaten first. Many people think that street dogs are aggressive. This may happen occasionally, but most dogs are trusting and friendly, because they depend on people to provide them with scraps of food in order to survive. On our tour we drive to fixed feeding places that the dogs know and where we are eagerly awaited. One of our problem children are the many puppies that we meet on every tour. Most are protected and cared for by their mother, but unfortunately we also keep coming across puppies without a mother, like this little girl. She is covered in fleas and ticks and has no chance of survival without a mother. This means that she is considered an emergency and is taken away, examined by a vet, vaccinated and then placed in one of the rescue centers. She is then advertised for adoption and can ideally travel to Germany. But why are there so many street dogs in countries like Turkey? The population is not sensitized to the issue of animal welfare. If their dog becomes a nuisance to them, many simply abandon it; mothers and unwanted puppies in particular often suffer this fate. This mother was probably just abandoned, she is running across the street disoriented. She is obviously used to people, as trusting as she is. She has four puppies with her that need to be caught and housed so that they are not run over. We were able to bring this small family to safety - hundreds of dogs are left behind. And that's why we're continuing and setting off on the next feeding tour in a few days.
