With a length of 413 kilometers, it is the second longest tributary of the Elbe after the Moldau. It rises in the Fichtel Mountains in Upper Franconia. To distinguish it from the smaller Franconian Saale in Lower Franconia, which flows into the Main, it is officially called the Saxon Saale in the Bavarian part. I personally know the section from Rudolstadt to Blütengrund and the Hohenwarte reservoir as a paddler and find these sections very beautiful.
