The play presents a Russia similar to the Romanian Countries of that time: the life of the small aristocracy in the cities of Russia does not have the glamor of the tsarist court, but it has its laws, and disobeying them can turn you into an outcast. The story begins to close by recounting the return of an aristocrat, Feodor Lavretki, from his wanderings in Europe to the provincial town where he has an estate and some relatives, after being left with a bitter taste due to his wife's controversial lifestyle in Paris. In a small town, everyone knows everything, and Lavretki's return ignites talk in the town halls. His cousin, the widow Maria Dimitrievna, receives him more out of curiosity than pity. Here, however, he meets Liza, her daughter, a 19-year-old young woman, who arouses his passion. However, he cannot marry her, because although he has left his wife, the bond of marriage remains valid. In addition, Liza is courted by Pansin, the piano teacher. One day Feodor learns from the newspaper that his wife has died. He is free, then, to marry Liza. But when everything seems to be going smoothly...
