Sometimes a tiny nudge is enough to knock something big over. That's how it works on our planet too. A small increase in temperature can be the nudge to irreversibly change certain climate systems. Think of the Greenland and West Antarctic ice caps, the northern permafrost or the Atlantic Gulf Stream. If such a tipping point is reached, the planet will change permanently and we as humans will no longer have any influence on it. We explain how this works, together with environmental scientist from Utrecht University Arie Staal. He co-wrote a major study on such climate tipping points.
