Most of the dangers of fasting that I'll cover are not related to 16- to 18-hour fasts. This is especially true for extended fasting, which means fasting for 48 to 72 hours or even longer. The purpose of eating is not just for fuel. It’s also for nutrients. When you fast, you’re restricting food. If your diet doesn’t provide the nutrients you need when you eat, you can end up with deficiencies that can lead to problems. It’s important to do extended fasting correctly and avoid common mistakes related to the dark side of fasting. The dark side of extended fasting: 1. Refeeding syndrome Eat a small amount of food when you come out of the fast, wait a few hours, and eat more. Avoid overeating or carbs. 2. Dirty keto Make sure you’re eating nutrient-dense, high-quality foods on the keto diet. 3. Not eating while fasting You need to get at least electrolytes, sea salt, trace minerals, and B vitamins while fasting. 4. Kidney stones If you’re prone to kidney stones, avoid high-oxalate foods. Also, drink at least two and a half liters of fluids a day, and add lemon juice to your water. When you do return to eating, eat a large salad. 5. Anorexia Anorexia causes nutritional deficiencies. Switch to a keto diet instead of fasting. 6. Athletes who are not yet used to fat Give your body enough time to fully adapt to fat before fasting for long periods. 7.
